DICE stage 3 forcing

We have now created some new forcing files for both the LSMs and the SCMs for stage 3, based on the model results submitted in stage 1.

DICE stage 3a forcing for the LSMs

There is only one set of forcing data, at 20 m for all variables. The screen/10m levels could be used (as in stage 1a) but the diagnosis of these variables is problematic in SCM forced by the observed surface fluxes (as was the case in stage 1b) and several SCM did not submit this data as a result. The 20 m forcing dataset interpolates between grid levels (or in some cases extrapolates below the lowest model level) for which simple linear interpolation has been used for simplicity. The resulting forcing datasets are plotted here for 20m level.

The 20m level forcing files for the LSMs:

DICE stage 3b forcing for the SCMs

These are the forcing files used in the intercomparison. Here the surface heat and moisture fluxes and surface stresses (where available, otherwise the observed ustar is reused) are simply extracted from the LSM data submitted for stage 1a. PLEASE NOTE THE UPWARD RADIATVE FLUXES IN THESE FILES HAVE ERRORS SO DO NOT USE THEM BUT USE THE OBSERVED ALBEDO AND LSM SURFACE T INSTEAD. Also, as documented here, some of the LSM have incorrectly been given the observed ustar, which is then inconsistent with the LSM scalar fluxes. Corrected consistent datasets are given below. We have also updated the model output webpages with a suggested filename convention for stage 3. Please have another look at the LSM and SCM requirements.

Updated DICE stage 3b forcing for the SCMs

These are a more recent update to the forcing files that include additional contributors to stage1a and corrected to use to the internal LSM's ustar for all LSM (except lsm20 and 21 which did not provide ustar and so these lsm forcing files still use the observed ustar). Note that these forcing files were not used in the formal intercomparison but might be useful to people rerunning DICE for their own research. Note also that the numbering has changed (so lsm07, for example, may not come from the same LSM model as above - the intercomparison LSM numbering is given here while these revised forcing files are documented here).
